12 March 2010 - Lake Alexander reopened

Darwin City Council advise that Lake Alexander has now reopened for swimming.

27 February 2010 - Ironman Malaysia

Conditions were tough in Malaysia. Grant finished his first Ironman today in a time of 13 hrs 12 mins 27 secs, not quite the result he wanted but very commendable given a flat at 100km mark and another some 40km later which meant a further 40km ride back into town on his wheel rim.  Congratulations Grant, you are an Ironman !

Robyn defended her age group title with another win in F55-59.  Her time of 13 hrs 35 mins 55 secs wasn't up to her course record time set in 2009 but enough to secure another Ironman World Championship slot in October.

15 February 2010 - Korgan mystery

The K Man has confirmed that he definitely WASN'T at Lake Bennett !

12-14 February 2010 - Lake Bennett Training Camp

The camp got underway in the predawn light of Lake Alexander.  The plovers went ballistic with so many swimmers disturbing their sunrise.  Later that day, we were powering through the relatively cooler waters of Lake Bennett, just getting the swim finished before a huge electrical storm came through.

Saturday morning saw Chinner Road alive with cyclists all getting an early start.  We are still to confirm whether there was indeed a Korgan sighting !  Emma had the brightest light, Jane Marie the most relaxed riding style, big Simon was riding well and Justin and Luke tamed the course for the first time. Graeme & Barry seemed to cruise through ditto Jodie & Dave.  Rob, Phil and Robyn timed their bike finishes to perfection and copped a very welcome drenching during their run off the bike.  A very welcome recovery swim and stretch were completed before dinner.

Runs of various durations all got successful done early Sunday morning, followed by more swimming and stretching.  Then it was back to Darwin in time to complete late afternoon runs.  Some very tired but happy campers now get back to normal.

30 January 2010 - Lucky Kelly

Kelly has been lucky enough to win an entry to Busselton Half Ironman (1 May 2010).  Very exciting news as she has just relocated to Perth for work.

30 January 2010 - NT Aquathlon Champs

Wow all those swim squads certainly paid off for some judging by the swim times recorded! Grant put in a big effort to defend his title, just running out of distance to finish in 2nd place in 30.54.  Emma had a great swim and a solid run to also place 2nd in 35.10. Big Simon had a great day out and stopped the clock at 37.43; Ron returned from overseas and came down to race finishing in 37.43;  Justin looked good and worked hard for his 38.27; Tara continued her good form & crossed in 39.49 just ahead of Luke 39.56.  Ryoko (40.05) just held out Supercoach 40.06.  Phil BB's 40.48 was well earned, as was Graeme's impressive 41.40.  Jane Marie recovered from her early morning drenching and stopped the clock at 41.53,  ahead of Brian 45.50 and Barry 46.37.
Many of those racing long over the next couple of months had pretty solid training blocks over the weekend and elected to come down and support others rather than race.

Jane Marie had an awesome swim !

10 January 2010 - Welcome back !

Welcome back to all.  Squads are all up and running again.  We are dodging some weather but a quick look at the www.bom.gov.au site is always useful in helping to decide when to head out.

December News

Canberra Half Ironman - 13 Dec 09

Canberra is a tough course to make your half ironman debut but Angelika handled it all extremely well.  She is a super fish and was 4th in her age group in the swim.  Angelika crossed in a commendable time of 6.39.35 to be 9th in Age Group.  Well done !

Both Grant and Michelle stepped up and raced Open for the first time.  They were up against the likes of Jason Shortis and Rebecca Keat. What a fantastic experience for them both.

Grant improved hugely on last year and crossed in 5.02.58 in 13th place. Michelle went 5.10.44 to finish in 8th.

Vincent was wishing he was out there too but following his near death experience was lucky to be there in spectator role.

Singapore Marathon - 7 Dec 09

Damien kept Lizzy company in the Singapore Marathon, going the distance in 4 hrs 45 mins.  Great first effort from Liz and good to see Rowdy back from injury.

Xmas Splash N Dash - 6 Dec 09

This was hard work disguised as fun on the foreshore.  Grant and Emma both grabbed silver in this one.  Well done.  Kelly enjoyed her last Darwin event prior to heading west for her new job.  Phil smiled his way through the three runs, as did Graeme who used the swim legs as recovery.  Robyn and Peta pushed each other all the way to the finish line.  Belinda made it look easy as did Daz.

There was some creative interpretations of the various run courses, but all really good fun !  Well done all.

November News

Splashing and Dashing - 6 & 20 Nov 09

Emma easily took out the historical Splash N Dash at the Waterfront recreation lagoon on the 6th but then headed for chilly Europe.

Grant returned from the White Rock Triathlon at Subic, Philippines in good form and pushed Kyle all the way to take second at the longer Splash N Dash at Lake Alexander on the 20th.

Lots of improved swims happening from those attending swim squads at Nightcliff Pool and Lake Alexander.

October News

ITU Long Distance World Triathlon Championships - 25 October 2009

What a day !  The brrrr factor was happening early on race morning with everyone setting off wearing everything they owned to ward off the chill factor and the wind.

The guys left it until the last minute to don the wetties and that 3km swim (which went forever and ever up the Swan and then back again against the wind) through up some face slapping chop. The sun came out during the swim so the 80km bike turned into a windy but hot affair.  By the time everyone was out onto the 20km run the heat had been turned up a notch and pretty much turned into a survival exercise through the very exposed 4 laps run course.

Jodie recovered enough from the flu to cough her way through to a very inspiring 6.06.12 finish time; not to be out done Dave hit the panadol a couple of days out and despite being asked to consider a spectator role for the day, was able to finish in 5.15.48.  Daz made it into the Top 10 in his age group finishing in 5.53.29 and a vow never to race below the Tropic of Capricorn again !

Darwin results:

Mick Outhred 13th M30-34 4.33.16
Michelle Gailey 6th F25-29 4.48.06
Craig Garland 38th M40-44 5.14.12
Dave McLeod 40th M40-44 5.15.48
Daryl Stanley 10th M60-64 5.53.29
Jodie McLeod 37th F40-44 6.06.12

Kate was there too and it was great to catch up.  She sends her best wishes to all.

Race 2 Duathlon Series - 25 October 2009

Only 32 competitors were available for this race which was also the 2009 NT Duathlon Championships.  Emma set up a good lead during the 5km run and held on to take the women's championship in 1 hr 04 mins 08 secs.  Good one Em !  Kelly was third female in 1.10.27 taking her age group.  Good to see Vicki up for a visit.

Mark and Ian were out of retirement placing 3rd & 4th. Simon C wnet 1.03.55 and scored an age group second place. James showed Wednesday running is helping and Phil BB clocked a 1.12.48

Race 1 Duathlon Series - 11 October 2009

Grant came into T1 with a 3 sec lead, had a great bike and finished off strongly to finish 2nd Overall in 39 mins 23 secs.  Bin also had an impressive bike and took 2nd female overall in a time of 47.21. Great results from both.

We had lots of leave passes for this event with so many away in Hawaii &/or Melbourne or doing their specific training for Perth World Champs.  And we send get well wishes to those suffering or recovering from the dreaded lurgy.

Melbourne Marathon - 11 October 2009

A great result for Kelly who backed up the gruelling Tour de Timor with the Melbourne Marathon.  Kelly clocked 3.38.26 for 26th in F25-29 - very impressive !

Ironman World Championships Hawaii - 10 October 2009

Nikki and Robyn joined the who's who of triathlon in Hawaii. today.   Tough conditions for the girls but they both came through in flying colours.  Nikki went 12.04.48 and loved every minute. Robyn was first Aussie home in the F55-59 category, stopping the clock at 13.54.11

Gold Coast Half Ironman - 4 October 2009

Phil put in an awesome effort for his first ever half ironman event.  He made it look easy going 5.45.40 for a podium third place finish in M55-59.

Well done Phil !

September News

Triathlon - 27 Sept 09

It was a perfect day for triathlon.

Grant crossed in 4th with a 38.18 for the 300m swim, 13km bike, 3km run and immediately stripped down so it was pretty hot competition out there.  Dave had a good crack and impressed with 6th place in 39.21.  It was a close call for Phil BC to make registration, and then Mr Laid Back zipped around in 40.37.  Daz posted a 44.04 and promptly declared he loves the short, sharp format and Bertram put in a solid 47.08 effort.  Barry 49.51 and Graeme 54.15 also had reason to smile.

Emma was first in the female field with a 41.12 effort and Bin was 3rd in 42.55.  Shelley enjoyed her first tri and posted a very creditable 52.59.

Nikki, Jodie and Phil were up at the velodrome doing brick sets and Robyn was out trying to regain some run form.  Korgan's unfortunately been on the sick/injured list but hoping for a reappearance this coming week.

Reverse Order Triathlon - 13 Sept 09

Thinking caps were required this morning with the race starting with a 4km run, followed by 13km on the bike and finishing with a pretty tough 300m swim.

Grant handled the brain gym well and was just pipped into 2nd place with a snappy time of 42.01.  Dave was 4th across the line in 44.04 just ahead women's winner and 5th overall, Michelle 44.52.  Emma was 2nd in 46.16.  Belinda crossed in 49.04, then Phil BB in 52.00 just ahead of Bertram 52.13 and Tara 52.29.  Daryl played good samaritan when John took a tumble but came home in 54.03.  Graeme had a good day out finishing in 57.29 and it was great to see Ron back after his shoulder injury.

Jodie was out putting in the hard yardson the bike out around Channel Island way, Nikki was still swaning around in Europe running mountain goat style and Robyn seems to have turn flu corner and was checking out muscle memory with a run.

Darwin Triathlon Club Presentation Nite - 5 Sept 09

A large group was in attendance at the annual dinner held this year at the Ski Club.

After a huge coaching effort all year Supercoach, would have been pleased to see his influence feature highly on the club awards list.

This included Michelle who took out the Aquathlon Series & her age group pointscore; Grant was 3rd in the Sprint Series and picked up a nice voucher for his efforts; Belinda won the Womens Series and also her Age Group pointscore award; Mark and Daryl in their respective age groups as well.  Phil BC won the Ironman Achievement award; Nikki is Club Champion, Korgan & Kelly received encouragement awards and Dave was most improved male. Congratulations to all.

Robyn had lots of nice things said about her and was recognised with Life Membership of the Darwin Triathlon Club. Still recovering from a huge dose of the flu, she will save celebrations for later !

August News

Triathlon, Casuarina Beach - 30 Aug 09

There was a good roll up of competitors for this open water swim event. The multi looped bike and run course meant you could easily check the progress of others in the race.

Emma made it all look easy, taking the female honours in 46 mins 56 secs. Tara, Jodie & Bin also looked to be travelling well.  In the guys Dave pressed hard for a top ten placing, while Vincent, Rowdy and Phil BB also carved up the course.  Times not yet available.

Ironman 70.3 Philippines - 23 Aug 09

Over 100,000 spectators lined the bike course to witness the inaugural Ironman 70.3 Philippines Triathlon held in Naga.

Daryl's coaching expertise was again in evidence with Grant going 4.27.07 to grab 11th overall male and 2nd in his age group; Michelle was also impressive taking 1st age group & 6th female home in 4.53.12 and Robyn pb'd over the distance with 6.03.50 to win her age group (she again had the honour of being the oldest female competitor). Saying "never again" for about the 5th time, Supercoach clocked a 5.36.50 to easily win his age group.

Put this race on your triathlon wish list.

NT Long Course Triathlon - 16 Aug 09

Impressive results all round at the 2km swim, 60km bike, 16km run event.  There were some swift swim times (showing we have all been putting in at squad) recorded first up and then some solid efforts on the bike and run.

Lauren was coming off injury but still managed 3rd female overall and 3rd in age group with 3.57.10; Belinda clocked 4.02.17 coming in ahead of Nikki(4.03.35) who looked like she could do it all again.  Daz crossed in 4.14.46 with Kelly (4.15.47) running home well just behind.  Phil BB was steady all day and came home in 4.23.54 having cruised past Robyn (4.31.56) early in the run. Next in was Angelika 4.33.35 then Korgan 4.35.21, Bertram 4.35.21 and Brian 4.57.16.

Special mention for K Man who came through his long course swim with flying colours.

Beach 2 Bridge - 8 Aug 09

Big day for Tara!  She crossed as second female overall and age group winner.

Noosa Half Marathon - 2 Aug 09

A week ago it wasn't even on the horizon but an inspired Brian decided the time was right for a crack at the half marathon distance.  Brian finished officially in 2.05.58 (but can claim some time off due to the shuffle to the actual start line) for a great first up effort.  Not to be outdone, Angelika posted a huge personal best, finishing in 1.59.39.

July News

Darwin Half Marathon - 26 July 09

Some good performances at the Darwin Half in the warmer than usual conditions.  Dave backed up after a big day at Lake B with a 1.41.54 at the Darwin Half & Nikki took 4th female overall in 1.42.05.  Peta made her aim of getting under the 2 hour mark, coming in to stop the clock at 1.58.38 just ahead of Jodie's 1.59.41.

Grant ran out of fuel and dnf'd but learned a lot about pacing and nutrition along the way.  Brian did his 10km with ease.
Sandra got an offer to good to refuse and found herself in Cairns instead of pounding the pavement.

Lake Bennett Camp - 24-26 July 09

We all survived ! That includes those who did their "camp" back in Darwin.

Lake Bennett turned on some magic weather and our long sessions were absorbed with the minimum of fuss.

Hawaii bound Nikki and Robyn were happy to tick their ride/run boxes; Perth bound Dave, Jodie, Michelle and Micko likewise. Ian took the opportunity to get some bike miles under his belt.  Grant powered on, Kelly and Phil stepped up with ease and the three B's (Bertram, Bin and Brian) made it look too easy.

Some headed home late Saturday ready to do the Darwin Half as their long run Sunday morning.  Half's were happening at Lake B as well with Supercoach, Kelly, Bin & Bertram going the distance.  Michelle was a day out, completing her's on Monday.

Thanks to the Birks' for their great hospitality Saturday night.  Also to Michelle for working on our flexibility & gift of stretch bands.  And last but not least thanks to Supercoach for providing the structure to get us through a big load of training.

Sprint Race - 19 July 09

Perfect weather conditions were present for the last of the dry season sprint races.  Again a cosy field, with all the good gear on display.

Phil BB's program will probably step up a notch given he beat supercoach out of the water !

It was a bit windy out on the bike leg but the cooler temperatures made for some great run times being recorded.  You just have to love this time of year & enjoy it while it happens.

Michelle made it three out of three when she crossed the line in 1.16.35 just ahead of Loz's flying finish in 1.17.35.  She just pipped Blue who stopped the clock at 1.17.38.  Rowdy shaved some time off race 2's effort to finish in 1.18.46.  It wasn't all holiday in the States for Phil BC who crossed next in 1.20.37. Daz's competitive spirit emerged & he crossed in 1.24.33 & holding out Phil BB (1.24.53).  Tara bought the family to give her the extra edge & she recorded 1.28.02 & was followed in by Simon (1.30.48).

Tough luck for Grant who was up there riding hard on the bike, when his pedal disconnected and left him pedalling one legged. As he was only half way through the bike it was a case of "all over red rover", for Grant.

Robyn and Peta were spotted out doing long runs, Louise turned up for timekeeping and has promised a swim comeback but thinking the T d F coverage is taking it's toll on the rest.
Sprint Race - 5 July 09

There was a distinct chill in the air & some questioning of state of mind when alarms rang for this event. However the water temp of Lake A proved ideal, and the cooler start seemed to spark many into an energetic pursuit of PBs.

The girls were on fire in the sprint distance with Michelle (1.15.12) crossing as first female, followed in by a flying Emma 2nd (1.18.44) who was just ahead of Loz (1.18.52) in 3rd. Ironlady Nikki (1.21.44) came from behind to edge out Bin's awesome (1.21.47).  Tara's 1.27.39 was a great result & even Robyn's 2nd across the line "at the other end" effort of 1.34.08 was solid.

Mark was the best of the guys, coming out of retirement to finish in 6th overall in 1.15.twenty something, just ahead of Grant 1.15.27 who made a rare daylight appearance. Rowdy put in a comfy 1.19.20 effort with the visiting Mal tracking close by.  Daz is defying gravity and posted a slick 1.22.35. But drum rolls for a couple of super performances ... Phil BB was scooting along nicely to finish in 1.24.42 (still smiling) and Bertram nailed his run in brilliant fashion to clock 1.26.11.

In the short option Angelika came in 3rd overall in 48.03.  Good to see Barry getting along well in 50.35.  Brian is also looking in good form and stopped the clock at 52.05.  Graeme is also coming along nicely and finished in 53.28.

With dry season visitors and associated activities happening we had a good turnout for this one.  Well done.

June News

Bali International Triathlon - 28 June 09

Results are in from the Bali International Triathlon and we have reason to celebrate with Michelle Gailey leading the women's field from start to finish to take the overall win in 2.36.39.

With a position change for transition, the course included a 750m beach run this year. Competitors were certainly warmed up for the very challenging 40km ride course. The 10km run through the busy Jimbaran village area again lived up to it's reputation as a toughie.

Michelle also took out the F25-29 category.  Lauren was 7th Female overall and F20-24 winner in 2.51.24,   Robyn 1st in F55-59 (3.13.58) and Daryl 2nd in M60-64 in 2.58.23.

Other Darwin results Kyle 3rd overall and age group winner in 2.23.15, Ron 4th M40-44 2.41.32, Dave 7th M35-39 2.52.11; Ali C 3rd F40-44 2.57.21, Shaye 2nd F35-39 2.59.45, Helen 6th F40-44 3.10.28, Phill 23rd M40-44 3.23.43 and Tony's results are not yet showing.

Sprint Race - 21 June 09

Extra, Extra, Extra read all about it - Robyn beat Supercoach out of the swim !

Almost the big news of the day ... only over shadowed by some fantastic individual efforts.

Michelle showed fantastic form and came out of the water in 2nd behind Kyle. Leading from start to finish in the women's field, Michelle clocked 1.15.40 ish.

Dave put in a big effort to finish with 1.16.26.  He was followed in by Loz who really stepped up in this one. After a huge training load this week she posted 1.16.35 and grabbed 2nd F place.

Blue was next across in 1.18.28 holding out Rowdy's 1.21.04. Bin was 4th female in 1.22.06 coming in just ahead of Jodie (1.23.43) who had Supercoach (1.24.23) chasing hard.

Bertram impressed (again) with his bike performance & followed up with a great run to clock 1.26.27 ahead of Emma (1.28.21). Em's couple of big weeks competing in major events caught up in this one.  Angelika was on fire and posted 1.28.45, holding out Robyn (1.32.23) and Brian (1.36.59).

Rest week for many after their efforts at the Katherine Ultra.

Fannie Bay Swim - 20 June 09

We had a lot of spectators looking on.  Ideal conditions for the 2.1km long course and 1.2 km short course swims.

Good swims by Emma W who clocked a 41.34 in the long course.  Bin was a bit apprehensive about this event but she need not have worried as she posted a very respectable 41.57 for her first attempt at this open water distance.  Tara 46.45 and Bertram 46.47 bobbed up together after also recording great times.

Kelly opted for the short course and stopped the clock at 36.24.

Katherine Ultra Challenge - 13 June 09

Great results from our Ultra Challenge competitors.  Phil BC was solid all day to finish in 2nd place in 7.06.13. Phil also posted the fastest individual male road bike time. Way to go !Rob  got a silver medal time & 5th overall in 7.19.36. Big Simon made his ultra debut also coming in at silver in 7.34.41.  Mark grabbed a bronze time with 7.35.14 & Simon went well to come in at 8.21.36 also a bronze level time.

Emma impressed in the Teams, recording the fastest road bike split of all competitors (male, female, individual & team).

Teams Event - 7 June 09

A great deal of "serious" thought was given to who and in what order we would do at this event.  Even more thought was given, by some, to what to wear.

Once the hard part of who was doing what and when was settled, the fun began.  Racing was fast and furious. K Man got a taste of glory when he came off the bike first in the early stages.  There was a lot of good natured sledging, some light sabotage and more than just a little bit of competitive spirit as everyone did their best to catch up to, run down, or stay with opposition team members. Good fun !

The biggest news was the emergence of Jane De G for a very, very rare appearance, to add some glamour and speed to her team.  Let's hope for more Jane sightings in future.

OSIM Singapore Update  - 3 June 09

TAS remind those interested in competing in the OSIM Singapore International Triathlon (2 Aug 09) that closing date of entry is 30 June 09 or full field.  Further information www.triathlon.sg

May News

Belinda wins Bark Hut Handicap - 31 May 09

NT News Report by GREGOR MACTAGGART

June 1st, 2009

BELINDA Birk produced a Robbie McEwen-style winning burst to become the 2009 Balance Podiatry Bark Hut Classic champion.

Birk won the annual Darwin Cycling Club classic yesterday when she completed the 73km race to Humpty Doo in 2 hours, 22 minutes and 52 seconds (2:22.52).

Her winning margin was not even one second as runner-up Nicole Hoey finished with exactly the same time as Burke.

The pair produced a Tour de France-style battle-royale to the finish line.

Both Birk and Hoey capitalised on their handicap starts - with the two cyclists setting off 39 minutes ahead of the scratch riders.

In addition to a cash prize for her victory, Birk also received the renowned yellow jersey awarded to the Classic's winner.

More than 50 riders ranging from 15 years of age through to 60 tackled the course that took in the Mt Bundy Ranges, Adelaide River floodplains and the long stretch into Humpty Doo for the finish.

Triathlon turned duathlon - 24 May 09

Due to the reports that stingers were still present in the open water, the race became a duathlon with a short run to start.  The field was well down with many away and others opting out of the duathlon format.

Most reports have featured the dreaded "d" word, and it seems a whole lot of drafting was taking place.

Phil BC travelled well to finish in 37.02.  Michelle put in a blistering run to have the fastest run time of the girls and finish in 38.56.  Loz's (39.42) held out Emma W (40.17) and Tara's solid 44.25.

Blue was an uncharacteristic dnf.

Bali Wedding - 23 May 09

Nikki and Ian's wedding took place in Bali.  Fairytales are made of this !  Beautiful setting, all members of the wedding party looked a treat, the food was to die for, the speeches just right and the guests partied on, on, & on.

You can't have Supercoach in the vacinity and let it all go though, and many of the guests were seen jogging through the village, doing run throughs & shuttle runs on the lawns of the villa or just out battling the waves (no ...  not on the morning of the wedding, that was before and after).

Congratulations to Ian and Nikki.

KUC hitout - 17 May 09

While some were doing the Arafura Games Half Marathon, others were down at Lake Alexander for a different purpose ... it was time to hone the Ultra Challenge skills.

Equipment, nutrition, body and soul all got a good workout during the swim, crosscountry run, MTB, road run, kayak and road ride hit out for those doing KUC.  Others were down just to do portions of the training.  Good form was on display by both athletes and support crews !

Triathlon Australia Team Announced - 12 May 09

Congratulations to those named in the TA Age Group Team for the 2009 ITU Long Distance World Triathlon Championships in Perth later this year (Oct).

Michelle, Jodie, Dave, Craig, Micko & Daryl have all made the team.  Well done !

They have a week to accept or decline their position on the team.

Arafura Games Triathlon - 10 May 09

You could feel the anticipation and excitment building during the week & then suddenly it was Saturday & race rego time. Once the brief was done, we had a last quick dip in the lake and then it was home to set the alarm clocks in readiness.

The full moon was welcome for the early start, the weather was absolutely perfect and the organising committee had done a fantastic job setting up.

Then before we knew it, it was game on !

Some reported having a rough swim, but for others it was smooth sailing.  The bike course was challenging (while the interstaters weren't perturbed by the hills, they were unusual on a local race course for us) and the run was well supported with drink stops, mist spray and sponges.

Grant (the Green Streak) starred with a top 10 finish & an Arafura Bronze medal in M20-24, crossing the line in 2.09.12. (..and don't forget that the bike course was a couple of kms long).  Phil BC was also impressive bringing in a solid 2.22.41 ahead of Michelle's (post flu) NT Championship 1st & 4th female overall effort of 2.23.14.

Blue was on her tail & closing coming in at 2.23.44. Dave pb'd with a well earned 2.24.35.  Mark had some bad luck with puncture problems but came in at 2.27.05, followed by Emma W (2.27.33) who flew through the run to just pip Leila (2.27.37).

Lauren (2.29.32) had a fantastic run and had Rob (2.29.31) in her sights but he kicked it up a notch to just hold her out.  Big Simon's new bike worked a treat and he was impressive in 2.32.01.  Daryl showed he has what it takes, stopping the clock in 2.35.17 with Belinda B snapping at his heels with a 2.35.28.

Rowdy's Kakoda trip didn't see him lose much, he finished in 2.41.12.  Then came Jodie in 2.42.43, followed by Tara who was solid all day to post 2.43.25 and the ever smiling Kelly who had fun during her 2.46.13 outing.

Angelika was happy with her pb of 2.49.41; Korgan (2.50.54) gained a whole lot of experience in his first Olympic Distance.  Belinda S ran well to a 2.51.19.

Bertram will be disappointed his awesome swim time wasn't recorded but there is photographic evidence to show him on the feet of Supercoach but happy with his 2.51.58 effort which flogged the sox of Robyn's 2.54.51.

Emma L was fantastic, stepping up from complete novice to Olympic Distance in 3.00.47 so rapidly. Barry was thrilled to get through it all injury free in 3.05.09 as was Brian in 3.09.37.

Simon, Louise & Peta were out there helping out and we had lots of encouragement from those who came down to spectate.

Well done everyone.

When checking results your swim time includes the run up to T1 and your run time includes your T2.  The bike course was almost 2km long.

Katherine Ultra Challenge report - 6 May 09

Athletes targetting the Katherine Ultra Challenge can now be spotted paddling & mountain biking as well as swim, bike & running. KUC takes place on 13 June 09.

Swim/Run Session & Course reccy - 2-3 May 09

Supercoach had the course all set up before daylight on Saturday for the swim/run brick & that included a couple of run distance options.

The Green Streak looked comfy, as did Lauren, Leila and Emma W. Phil BC scooted through it all quickly, Bertram's swimming is coming on a treat and Phil BB is wishing he could actually race next week. Belinda H, Jodie and the rest also look ready.  The only downside as that Michelle coughed and coughed & Rob gave the run a miss after his boat ramp stumble.

Sunday's ride over the bike course caused some various comments.  Easy for some, testing for others but mostly it was the wind that was the main topic of conversation.

Bring it on !

April News

Grant gets a helping hand - 29 Apr 09

We would like to acknowledge and thank K9 Cycles, cnr Totem Road & Delatour St, Coconut Grove for assisting Grant.

Grant is extremely grateful for their practical help and will be representing K9 to the best of his ability.

Swim/Run Brick - 25 Apr 09

With Arafura fast approaching, some specific race preparation was happening.  Athletes tested gear, nutrition & hydration (as well as mind and body) down at Lake Alexander.

Some took the opportunity to get their ride in early prior to the brick session.  Bin, Dave, Jodie, Emma L and Brian were warmed up nicely to start.  Michelle was also an early starter wanting to get away for birthday party duties.   Phil's BB & BC looked comfy, the Green Streak rocketed through his efforts, and the ledge caught a few toes (ouch). Lauren did her efforts with ease (dreaming of the difference the new bike is going to make).  Kelly, Korgan, Blue and Barry were finished in no time. Tara, Peta and Louise also finished well along with Bertram, Daz and Big Simon.

There were a few yawns early (especially from the keeper of transition) but the energy levels picked up considerably as soon as everyone hit the water.  No racing was happening, but good solid efforts were on display. Bring on Arafura !

Phuket filling up fast - 24 Apr 09

News from race organisers in Phuket is that the field is 90% full already.  Thinking of heading over in December?  Best to secure your spot now.

Arafura Lead Up - 19 Apr 09

We were taken out of our comfort zone with the change of transition area and now have a taste or a memory jog of what to expect in three weeks time.

With the large turnout & an out & back 2 lap swim course, the lake was a little conjested at some points but all good practice.  There were some good swims recorded (though mine wasn't one of them).

Traffic was somewhat quieter than the last race & not so many red light catches were reported.

Best home in the guys was Grant in 4th in a swift 1.24.57 with Mark in 6th with 1.30.34.  Blue had a blinder to record 1.33.12 ahead of Big Simon 1.40.38 and Daz 1.43.12.  The arrival of Korgan's bundle of joy (boy) during the week didn't distract and he stepped up to finish in 1.46.33.  Simon was next across the line in 1.47.40 then Phil BB in 1.49.41 followed by Bertram in 1.52.20 & Brian 2.07.33.  Dave's run of bad luck continued as he punctured on the bike course.

The girl's were in great form with Emma W taking 2nd spot (again) in 1.37.17 ahead of a fast finishing Leila in 3rd 1.38.12.  Lauren was 4th in 1.41.21.  Jodie stepped up to record a strong 1.46.42, Tara was flying & impressed with her 1.47.47 just ahead of Peta 1.48.48.  Emma L made it look easy & crossed in 1.52.41 ahead of Jane Marie 1.52.55 and Belinda 1.52.58. Robyn cruised in at 1.55.32 just ahead of Kelly who clocked 1.56.45

Michelle called it a day in the swim having battled a sore throat for a few days.  Bin was also an unlucky dnf after getting a flat while out on the bike.

Rob took out the short option in 51.42, Belinda H was 2nd in the girls in 58.22 and Barry pulled up well in 1.00.03

Good fun and exercised the grey matter with the change of transition and finish line.

The stork has been - 15 Apr 09

Korgan has a leave pass from training for this week following the arrival of new baby boy, Kaan who weighed in a 3.5kg. Mum and baby doing well.  Congratulations Korgan & Tiziana on the new addition to the family.

Ironman Australia - Port Macquarie - 5 Apr 09

A wet & muddy lead up for those at Port Mac.  Those back in Darwin spent the day tracking everyone, keeping a running spreadsheet as they passed the timing points (well those that were working), ringing Ali on the roadside for spotters info.  and sending good luck vibes. Exciting day.

And then of course there were those out there having all the fun ...

Ian came in at 10.24.20 (only five weeks after IM Malaysia), then Phil BC 11.25.15 (awesome debut time), Nikki 11.54.28 (with a Hawaii slot already in the bag, this was an impressive effort), Paul 12.08.32 (IM Oz no 5 & 7 all up), Rob 12.11.30 (another fantastic debut) and Micko limped in at 12.59.25 with the calf holding up until the 16km mark of the run.

Well done to all, especially first timers Phil and Rob !

TA Challenge Race - Geelong - 5 Apr 09

Craig ventured down south to Geelong for the final of the TA Challenge Series.  He was greeted by very cold conditions & needed to get into bed to keep warm.  Craig added to his points tally with 2.20.44.  He has had a long season, lets hope he makes the team.

Sprint Race, Lake Alex - 5 Apr 09

We joined a large field down at Lake Alex for a 750m swim, 26km bike & 5km run.  Conditions were great, bit of traffic on the roads and it did get a little warmer on the run for those of us out there longer than most.

Michelle had an awesome race holding off all would be challengers to lead from start to finish. Michelle stopped the clock at 1.16.25.  Emma W is rapidly regaining form and came through the field to be 2nd Female in 1.20.17.  Leila was our next across in 1.21.36, just holding out a late charge from Lauren 1.22.31.  Jodie starred in 1.26.43 making it look way too easy. Peta 1.29.53 and Tara 1.30.24 had their own little battle going on the run & came in ahead of Belinda S 1.30.36 & Robyn 1.32.54.  Emma L stepped up to the longer distance with style to post 1.35.50. Go Girls !

In the guys Grant came in 6th at 1.14.22 then Blue with 1.16.32. Big Simon went well and posted 1.23.30 holding out Supercoach who giving his all & finished in 1.24.31.  No wonder he had the hammer down as Simon (1.25.40) was closing fast behind him as was Korgan (1.25.49). Phil BB was looking good and clocked 1.28.55.  Bertram continues to improve, crossing in 1.32.14 (ahead of she who will remain nameless but who has a good memory).

The no show reasons varied .. missed plane, shifting house, pregnant, doing Port Mac, racing in Geelong or the tummy bug  got me.  All sounded pretty reasonable.

March News

Ironman 70.3 Singapore - 22 Mar 09

Bin has made an awesome 70.3 debut in Singapore, winning her age group and securing 3rd age group female overall.  Supercoach posted a 70.3 PB and second in his age group.

Dave was the best time of the group with 5.09.57 for 15th in M40-44; Belinda our next 1st F45-49 with 5.27.48; then Daryl 2nd M60-64 5.38.56; Jane Marie 9th M35-39 6.05.41 and Bertram 13th M50-54 in 6.29.41. Michelle, an unfortunate victim of marine stingers was a dnf.

Murray Man Triathlon, SA - 22 Mar 09

Micko 9th in age group at Murray Man today.

TA Challenge Series - Perth - 15 Mar 09

Micko, Grant and Craig headed west for the Australian Triathlon Championships.  Grant PB'd in M20-24 with a time of 2.07.09; Micko nursed a calf injury to clock 2.05.16 in M30-34 and Craig (M40-44) recorded a 2.12.36 and promptly went home for a panadol to relive flu symptoms.

Well done guys - great effort in very very competitive fields.

NT Sports Awards nominees announced - 14 Mar 09

Congratulations to Robyn Stanley (NT Masters Sportsperson of the Year category) and Michelle Gailey (NT Sportsperson of the Year category) nominees in the NT Sports Awards.

Consulting athlete Ali Fitch is again nominated in the NT Sportsperson of the Year category & Stu in the Masters category.

Enduro - Lake Alex - 8 Mar 09

A large field gathered at Lake Alex before the sun was up to get racked and ready for the very popular Enduro event. Racing was fast and furious over the 3 x (200m swim, 5km bike, 1km run) course.

While the first of the swim, bike, runs was quite orderly, things deteriorated rapidly after that.  Rob was sighted at one stage heading for the swim with his helmet on; Tara opted to leave her shoes on until half way to the swim and Peta was going to swim in her sunglasses.  And they were all sighted in a period of about 5 mins!

The guys had a great hit out with Craig best with a 4th in 50.35, then Mark close behind in 50.45.  Grant was next in 53.14; Dave showed good form to stop the clock at 54.55 ahead of Phil BC 55.43 and Rob 56.10.  Korgan was on fire and finished with 58.08 ahead of Simon 1.00.34. Next in was Supercoach happy to be racing again after injury. He recorded 1.02.02 to pip Bertram's 1.02.21 and Phil BB's 1.04.16.

The girls were everywhere.  Michelle lead from start to finish and clocked 55.30. Leila recorded a great 2nd place in 57.51. Belinda B rounded out the podium in 1.00.04.  Jane Marie made it look easy and finished in 1.02.52 holding out the comeback kid Loz 1.03.00 who just pipped Tara 1.03.08.  Peta was next across in 1.03.44, with Belinda H coming home in 1.04.08 ahead of a rapidly improving Emma L who clocked 1.07.14.

Well done, it looked like lots of fun !

February News

IM Malaysia - 28 Feb 09

Nikki, Ian, Damien and Robyn travelled to the Malaysian island of Langkawi to contest IM Malaysia.

They have all finished the IM billed as "the toughest show on Earth".

Nikki and Robyn blitzed their respective age groups and secured slots for Hawaii in October.

Robyn has set a new course record in F55-59 knocking  42 mins from the previous record which was set in 2002

Australian Long Course Champs - 22 Feb 09

Grant, Micko and Michelle headed down south to contest the Long Course Champs at Huskisson.

Grant is still testing the waters to find his preferred distance and finished today in 15th place in the M20-24 age group in an impressive 4.18.32.  We won't mention his run in with the draft officials.

Michelle had a fantastic run leg and continued claimed 6th place in F25-29 in a quick 4.32.52

Micko has had better days posting a dnf on this one.

Challenge Race Lake A - 22 Feb 09

Our ranks were very much depleted for this club event with Michelle, Grant & Micko racing interstate, Damo, Doc, Nikki & Robyn saving themselves for next week, a couple of "no mtbs availables", an "I'm going swimming in Tasmania instead", a timekeeping duty and a few other excuses of dubious nature!!

It was billed as a Challenge Race and it was!  First up the swim was any stroke bar freestyle, the mtb was a different course  so competitiors had to be alert and the run was along the beach all the way to Dudley Point and included a push up, a sit up and a chin up and then just to finish off, a basketball slam dunk was required !!

Dave in a team showed his butterfly (er, or was that porpoising) skills, Phill BC, Emma, Bin, Tara, Kelly and Phil BB all did whatever it took to get down the lake from the deep water (??) start.  Daz tried to keep his wounds dry but there was no way he could be talked out of the bike and the run after nearly a fortnight of inactivity.

The bike was a tad drier plus the beach section was not included and therefore faster than last race and the beach run was a welcome (?) change in this format.

Phil BC in cruise mode was our best, coming in at 5th in 54.27 with Team Daz next in 59.17.  Emma 59.39 (1st female) was miffed to be beaten by Supercoach ie until she was alerted to the fact he was in a team !!  Belinda (2nd) posted a 1.02.19, Tara (3rd) a 1.06.39, Kelly 1.07.31, and Phil BB 1.08.01.

Good fun was had by all.

Lake Bennett Training Camp - 13-15 Feb 09

A mass exodus from Darwin took place on Friday afternoon when a large group headed for Lake Bennett.  Fingers were crossed that the weather gods would be kind given the very full schedule set by Supercoach.

We kicked off with a swim on Friday evening and generally got everything organised for rides and runs next day.

Most hit the road early and the weather turned out to be brilliant (read, it didn't bucket down at any time).  The road had a few potholes and water in some of the washes which had to be dodged but other than that conditions were great. We all got through ride one, then ride two then ride three and most had a run off the bike just to finish off.  Rowdy was the unlucky one, getting a puncture early in the day and then Dave had a momentary memory lapse and forgot about some potholes and suffered some wheel damage when they jumped up and grabbed him.  Amazingly there was very little complaining about "those" hills and everyone seemed to manage to get through their programs with ease.

The recovery swim and stretch session were very, very welcome at day's end.  It was noted that Nath was already glowing by this stage and Peta was sporting nice lines.

Sunday morning sleep in .... forget it !  Runners were appearing from before 6am with some needing to get 2 or more hours in prior to swim time.   A couple of individuals galloped off into the fog (yes, fog) preferring to run out to the highway and back and Rowdy had a scary encounter with a snake.

Overnight Bertram had managed to give himself a good whack in the ribs by running into the bike rack on his car in the dark.. ouch !

Plenty of good form was shown and augers well for future racing.

A big thank you to Supercoach who keep us all focussed on the task at hand and had things ticking over nicely.

MTB Tri - Lake Alexander - 8 Feb 09

It was one of those events not to be missed.  The race brief had many scratching their heads wondering just where we were going,  but unless you were going to be first out of the swim, most decided it would be a case of follow the leader.

The swim was in and out of the Lake in a big zig zag, the bike was up, down, around through all sorts of terrain much of it slippery, muddy, sandy and all points in between.

Supercoach decided early he would take a dive and pulled out and watched from the sidelines while the blood stopped flowing and the lump on his shin went down.  Ouch!  Bertram offered his cheek to a tree just to add to the wound tally.

After the first couple of laps on the bike the looks of determination & concentration grew on most faces and it  seemed sheer relief when the bike came to an end.

The cross country nature of the run, following part of the now churned up bike course, was a hard slog adding to the challenge of making it to the finish.

Mark ate up the course and finished the Prince of MTB in 1.04.37, followed home by Phil BC in 1.07.14.  Simon looked great all day & came in at 1.13.40 then Bertram with 1.22.10 and Phil BB in 1.22.51.

MTB Princess Rosie sloshed her way around the course looking strong and came out winner in 1.19.17 with Peta grabbing third spot with 1.22.25.  A determined Tara, 4th with 1.23.08 was followed in by Belinda B 1.26.43.  Emma L enjoyed her first tri experience, albeit somewhat different to normal, to finish in 1.29.55 ahead of mother duck Jodie 1.30.07 who kept a close eye on the team kids out there.

Barry was around but with no mtb, did his own version and Paparazzi went out in sympathy with Supercoach and took photos instead of finishing.

Grant was on hand to do some fantastic marshalling, thereby averting a number of head-ons; Micko went bush for the weekend (no mtb); Nikki & Ian were saving themselves for bigger things and we will just have to see what other excuses are invented by the other no shows.  Good fun was had by all, Supercoach recovering.

TA Challenge Series - Redcliffe - 1 Feb 09

Grant, Micko, Craig and Michelle made the long haul over to the East Coast to compete in the Moreton Bay leg of the TA Challenge Series.

Grant posted a solid 2.12.54 and a 13th in the M20-24 category; Micko who has had a few mechanical woes of late, stopped the clock at 2.15.52 for 16th in M30-34; Craig again put in his big race effort to secure 8th in M40-44 with 2.21.58 and Michelle also made top 10 with her F25-29 9th place in a time of 2.29.45.

Micko & Craig add to their selection points earned in Adelaide in November and Grant & Michelle kick started the campaigns.

January News

NT Aquathlon Championships - 24 Jan 09

Micko donned the Race Director apron for this one and managed to get the rain to hold off but couldn't do a thing about the water temp of definitely over 30 degrees in Lake Alex.

The large field got underway and headed for the buoys in a flurry of arms and legs.  Swim squad members were taking particular note of who was where and when!

Nuggett was out of the water in 2nd place with Doc a couple of seconds back just ahead of Grant and Michelle who was up there with the guys & 6th out of the water.

The great run course gave us all a chance to see what was happening.  My first view of the leaders had Grant tracking in 2nd and looking very, very comfy as was Michelle who was streets ahead in the women's field.

Next glimpse of Grant was on his way back, this time in the lead & working hard.

Grant lived up to expectations and took the title in 28.44, Nuggett showed good pre Brissie form coming in 3rd overall 31.22, Ian next 31.32 and Michelle (1st female and 6th overall) had a great day out to finish in 32.32.  Mark made top 10 with his 33.09.

The Sat morning long ride didn't have any adverse effect on Phil BC who crossed in 36.51 just in front of comeback Emma 36.56 & Nikki 37.12.  Supercoach 38.23 held off many snapping at his heels including Phil BB 39.59, the ironlady 41.08, the K man 41.22, Belinda H 42.35,  and with Jane Marie 42.38 staying marginally in front of Simon 42.47 who turned the tables on Peta (44.24).  Barry called it a day half way through the run in the hope of preserving that suspect hammie.

The absentee notes had some interesting excuses - colds, surprise parties, recovery week personal choice & the good old "I'm working" was used by a few.

Congrats to Grant on his first NT Title win & Michelle on defending her title.

Aquathlon - 10 Jan 09

The weather held off for those riding in the morning, but sent down the rain in buckets for the aquathlon which started at 6pm.

Supercoach was race director so measured out the run, not once but three times so we are pretty sure all was accurate.

The pool resembled a mix master with all the thrashing arms of the 60 odd competitors.  Micko had goggle problems (note to Micko, new goggles required perhaps).

The 300m swim was all over in a matter of minutes and then it was on with the very wet shoes and off for a splashing 3km along the foreshore with the downpour keeping things nice and cool.

Micko cruised in a mere 16 secs down on the men's leader in 14 mins 50 secs, Grant (15.05) came through in 4th, Ian was 6th in 15.13 followed by Craig 15.47 then Mark rounded out the top 10 in 16.31.  Phil BC backed up a big training session with an 18.54, likewise Rob 19.14, Supercoach started the race then jumped in for a 19.59 effort ahead of Simon who came in at 21.29 & Paul  on the comeback after illness posted 23.45.

Michelle is in good form and was untroubled to win in 17 mins 02 secs (having warmed up with a late finish to 3 hrs on the bike, with Ironlady Nikki tossing aside the effects of a huge couple of weeks training taking 2nd spot in 18.28.  Good to see Emma making a comeback to racing crossing in 19.22 & holding out Rosie (19.32) who relished the competition. Belinda H had a ball in her first ever event,  posting 21.06, Jane Marie crossed in 21.16 and with Rich on kiddie watch, Kate B enjoyed the outing to come in at 29.32.  Well done.

Belinda B & Bertram were hiding under the umbrellas with timers in hand, Rowdy & Sandra were there supporting training mates and Robyn had some excuse about registration closing late and that there were photos to take.

A great way to start the new year of racing!

Celebration Time - Achievements - 21 Dec 08

Dave & Jodie hosted a fantastic night for the training group.  Following a sumptuous dinner (thank you master BBQ chef David, gourmet cooks Jodie & Bin and wine connoiseur Rob), we celebrated the performances of all during 2008.

Athlete achievements ranged from those doing their first ever half marathon to PBs at Ironman distance. Athletes raced all over Australia and internationally and many already have their race calendar planned for next year.

The shy and retiring Micko backed by the even quieter Craig, toasted Daryl's input as coach and mentor and congratulated him on his coaching success.

Also noted were the promises made to make 2009 even more memorable.

Thanks again to our wonderful hosts & happy Christmas to all.

Canberra Half Ironman  14 Dec 08

As always the Canberra weather was totally unpredictable & this year it was chilly & windy & the waves where up on Lake BG.  Michelle was there for a much needed race hit out and was up there in the overall placings and 4th in F25-29 in 5.33.58.  Grant was going long for the first time and came in at 5.38.38 in 11th place in the M18-24 category.  Ali Fitch was cheering from the sidelines as Stu was also racing, taking out the M55-59 category in 5.23.12

Big Weekend 6 & 7 Dec 08

Locally we had athletes Splash N Dashing at Nightcliff Pool, interstate they were tearing up the course at Ironman Western Australia and internationally they were giving their all in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon in Thailand.

Grant was hot on the leader's heels taking 2nd at Splash n Dash in 18.49.  Well done Grant - a great hit out before Canberra Half Ironman.  Phil finally had a chance to race & posted a swift 23.56 ahead of Simon 26.07 and Barry 26.31. Supercoach watched from the sidelines.

Meanwhile over in Busselton Rich and Scott were going great at IMWA.  Rich posted a great PB to finish in 10.35.03 and Scott a fantastic first effort 11.03.29.

November News

Howard Springs Duathlon

The weather conditions & heavy training load of many athletes meant we didn't have a huge turnout at Howard Springs.  Craig was Race Director, Micko helped out with marshalling, Michelle was behind the timeclock, & the photographer doubled as march fly food. Ouch!

Mark looked to be in good pre Phuket form and came in 4th overall in 1.03.11 and secured his age group title for the NT Duathlon Champs.  Dr Phil put in a good effort for a 1.10.26 and Supercoach blitzed his age group with his 1.15.51.

Lombok International Triathlon

News from Indonesia, Micko has come in 2nd in what is billed as the toughest triathlon in Asia.  His report is now on travelling triathlete page

Hidden Valley Duathlon

Hidden Valley duathlon was hot work over the 5km run, 20km bike,2.5km run format. An optional event for many, the start list was still impressive.  Most opted to ease into it, & with the first run going up the hill to the gates this proved a good strategy.

Mark recovering from injury sustained at Lake B still managed to come in 3rd overall in 1.05.55; Craig 1.10.15; Dr Phil in 1.13.10; Korgan impressed with a 1.18.50, Simon 1.20.11 held out Daz who finished in 1.21.11, Peta stuck to it for a 1.23.09 coming in ahead of Jodie 1.25.30 and Phil 1.25.51.

Robyn sat on the sidelines again, (how long can you use IM as an excuse we are wondering),  Grant had a good excuse - he was timekeeping with Sandra.

Micko heads for Lombok

Micko heads off for a triathlon adventure in Lombok on Friday. Billed as the toughest triathlon in Asia we will be eagerly awaiting his race reports.  Good luck Micko.

Sarah gets NTIS call up

You will all have noticed Sarah's dedication to her training.  She has now achieved another goal on her way up through the hockey ranks by being selected into the NTIS squad.  Well done Sarah.

October News

DTC Club Championships - Lake Bennett

Hot conditions were the order of the day at Lake Bennett with the thermometer showing over 40 degrees at race start.  Doc was RD for the day and had everything ship shape and even introduced iced sponges for competitior comfort.

There were good swims all round and some impressive riding on the two lap bike course.  Unfortunately the Cable Tie Guy took a dive on the mount line (degree of difficulty 8.2) which resulted in his eventually dnf on the run and a very painful chain ring cut to his ankle.

Nikki just kept on keeping on, was first off the bike and extended her lead on the run to be first female home & 2008/2009 Club Champion in 1.53.49 (which was an impressive 7th overall); Jodie ran strongly into second in 2.02.52 edging out Bin 2.03.08 who rounded out the podium places.  Rosie 2.06.58 & Peta 2.11.02 both had Lake B PBs.

Micko cruised into 3rd 1.40.27; super psychologist Scott was 4th in 1.45.21 (looking good for IMWA); Rob had a boomer to finish in 1.52.00 with Rowdy next across the line in 1.54.00 ahead of Simon 2.06.18.

Dave went out in sympathy with Mark, recording a dnf due to tummy upset ... not a happy camper when he was unable to put that great form into action on an empty stomach (or should that be emptied?).   Seriously, we wish both guys a speedy recovery.

In the short course option Craig came in 2nd in 53.07, Al posted a 56.03, Supercoach 59.49 held out Nic who enjoyed her first race in forever & was first female across the line in 59.55.  Comebacks went well for Emma 1.05.27 & Barry 1.08.19

Lake Bennett 2nd Training Camp

Dave was on a mission to crack the 150km mark.  Achieved, well done!

NT Sprint Camps

Congratulations to Belinda & Rosie, 2nd and 3rd in the NT Sprint Championships.

Gold Coast Half Ironman - 5 Oct 08

Ali Fitch has a dnf at the Gold Coast Half after coming down with a bug.  Ali had a swim and then listened to her body.  Stu is busy trying to get results rectified to show an age group win rather than a Clydesdale category (that he is not eligible for) result.

Stork as been - 5 Oct 08

We welcome a new little tri baby, Theo Bradbury born just after midnight this morning.  Congratulations to Kate, Richard and Ayrton on the arrival of their son and brother.

September News

Lake Bennett Training Camp 19 -21 Sept 08

We got underway on Friday afternoon wondering where Rosie was (some story about black outs and electric gates) which turned out to be the absent Bertram's fault (some story about something blowing up).  After that everything was Rich's fault. Mark decided a long distance drive sounded preferable to a training camp & dashed off interstate.  The rest of us enjoyed the open water swim around the buoys in place in preparation for NT long distance swim champs.

A novel location was chosen for the evening stretch, then it was early to bed in preparation for the Saturday morning ride. With everyone having different distances to do, the ride was a staggered start.  Lots to look at, wallabies, snakes, squished cane toads, and the long distance swim happening at Lake Bennett.

Rich was also on the lookout for the arranged signal of a towel across the fence which would indicate that Kate had decided enough was enough.

The first lap only had one big crest in it, this increased to few in each of the second & subsequent laps until by the time the last lap came around for she who will remain nameless, the pace was so slow up the 55 hills on the course that the flies could land!

Dave earned high praise for providing ice cold water bottles, lollies etc for those out in the heat of the day (favour to be returned next camp).  Micko was a great escort during the final lap & was quite convincing with his story that everything seems easy after a Lake B ride experience.

Most retired to aircon bliss for a couple of hours before we regrouped for another open water swim session followed by a lakeside stretch.  Then it was time for a camp cook out in very tough conditions ... that is until Bin let on that we should all assist with eating Bertram's share!  Full marks to Jodie, Belinda and Dave for a fantastic dining experience (looking forward to the next camp already).

Daryl had the markers for the run out very early so we could all knock over our individual run times, Micko was a bit of a straggler, so to Rich who hit the snooze button.  Dave ate far too much chocolate & retired early and the rest of us took advantage of the early morning serenity and knocked over our alloted distances.  Then more swim, breakfast and home to prepare for the tough bit ... that second run.

All looking forward to Camp 2 in late October.

Race 1 Sprint Series - 14 Sep 08

Near perfect conditions for Race 1 of the Sprint Series at Lake Alex (that's if you discount the rave party fall out). Nuggett towed a couple through the swim & then the lack of calories started to tell on him, the Cable Tie Guy had a good swim, an even better bike and a snappy run; Dave had a solid all round performance, Michelle also swam well & then tested wheels, Daryl and Bin went head to head all day, Bertram's all round performance keeps on keeping on, Phil enjoyed being out there again and the K Man is still on the up curve.  Jodie packed it in after the bike to go and check out the missing body parts caused by a family mount zone mishap. Mark was 3rd overall & scored max points in 1.13.03; Craig not far behind in 1.14.57; Dave 1.20.34, Michelle 1st F overall in 1.21.39; Daryl 1.25.14 just held out Belinda 1.25.35; Bertram came in at 1.27.18; Phil 1.28.15 and Korgan 1.32.30.  The paparazzi left the camera at home for once and those on rest weeks, showed remarkable restraint and rested !

Ironman 70.3 Singapore - 7 Sept 08

Great results all round from hot & humid Singapore.  Ali made it onto the podium in 3rd in a time of 4.31.45.  In M25-29 Micko came home in 10th 4.58.45 & Scott in 5.11.48 in 18th.  Michelle proved last year to be no fluke when she came in F25-29 age group winner & 2nd age group female home in 5.16.11.  Rob has his race spoilt by the lack of cycling skills of another competitor, but got up, dusted himself off and came back into 8th place in M45-49 category in a time of 5.44.42 (then headed for the medical tent for some ice for his shoulder).  Supercoach was 3rd in his age group in 5.55.34 and Robyn was 1st F55-59 in 6.06.55. Lauren was 4th in F18-24 in 6.06.55 & Stu was 1st in M50-54 in 5.07.44

Lost Sheep Triathlon - Kenmare, Ireland 7 Sept 08

Nikki & Ian survived the chilly conditions in the Half Ironman distance Lost Sheep Triathlon.  Ian was 9th Overall and 4th in M35-39 in 4.50.52.  Not to be outdone, Nikki also secured 9th Overall and 6th in F30-34 5.41.09.

Their reports are up on Travelling Triathletes page for your enjoyment.

August News

Open Water Triathlon 31 Aug 08

While those heading for Singapore were going around in circles at the velodrome, the lucky ones got to compete at the Open Water Tri at the Surf Club.

Nuggett earned a hefty six points at Race Director. The Cable Tie Guy Mark also got max points as first in his age group and 4th overall in 43.17.  Simon had a blinder to finish in 50.41, nudging out Rosie 51.15 who pipped Bertram 51.20 (just). Peta at 54.43 cruised in and The K Man, Korgan should be well pleased with his 56.56  (is the guy who wasn't going to swim?)

Ironman Canada 24 Aug 08

Congratulations to Ali Fitch, 2nd at Ironman Canada in a time of 9hrs 26 mins 15 secs.

NT Long Course Triathlon 24 Aug 08

The wonderful weather gods favoured us & the Long Course got underway in very mild conditions.  The cloud cover was much appreciated and the few drops of rain on the bike took us all by surprise.

Micko had a great swim to be first individual out of the water closely followed by Craig & Michelle.  He held front spot coming off the bike and had a cruisey run to finish 2nd Overall and age group winner in 3.13.10.  The Cable Tie guy got the nutrition sorted and blitzed with the second fastest run of the day to move from 9th off the bike into 4th (3.22.20).  Well done Mark! He was followed across the line by an impressive 3.25.55 from Michelle (2008 NT Long Course Champion) and Rich (3.28.23) also had an awesome run coming from 11th of the bike into 6th overall.

The superpsychologist Scott (3.31.22) had an interrupted preparation for this one but managed a top ten placing as did Nuggett (3.32.35).  Rob was relaxed and comfy at 3.33.45; visiting Kate was happy with her 3rd overall 3.46.43 effort, post flu Paul gritted his teeth for 3.49.08 ahead of Rowdy 3.49.44.  Supercoach 3.57.45 held off a blistering Rosie 3.59.48 to cross ahead of Jodie who had a very strong race over the distance to finish age group winner in 4.08.57 holding out the paparazzi (4.10.46), Simon (4.14.00), Peta (4.29.52) and Jenn who was back for her Territory fix (4.35.59)

Also special mention of Sandra's impressive bike/ run effort.  She is getting a taste for these longer events!

Nikki & Ian coping with the heat 18 Aug 08

and send greetings from a hot and dusty Qatar! They are enjoying some good gym sessions, found a 25M pool, and going to the sea this afternoon, plus have found a great tartan running track that circles the huge national stadium across the road from where they are staying. They are hopeful the temp is going to drop to 23 tonight from 42 today (humidity has been 70% plus).
They managed a brick today with no real problem, have finally worked out the treadmills, and one bike is good, the others are poor, but they are saying it's all do-able.

Beach2Bridge 16 Aug 08

Beach2Bridge proved to be a good training hit out particularly for those doing Ironman 70.3 Singapore.  Micko (2nd Male overall & age group winner) and Michelle (2nd overall female) both cruised through the 1.5km ocean swim and the 5km run. Hunk Rob, Lisa, Kate, Robyn, Jane, Peta, and Simon all finished with good results.  Gentleman Simon slowed up to cross with Peta. Lots of brownie points there.  A few wished the event included a bike leg as they missed it.

Palmerston 10 Aug 08

Two distances got underway in perfect conditions at Palmerston.  Olympic Distance competitors starting 31 mins ahead of those competing in the short option 300/14/3.

Doc (in go easy mode) was 2nd in 2.10.36, Richard came in at 2.15.36 ahead of super psychologist Scott 2.16.25, Paul 2.20.16, Damien 2.28.05, Phil 2.44.48 and Bertram 2.45.56.

Nikki took the women's podium in 2.24.37 ahead of Belinda  (2nd) 2.28.30, Rosie (3rd) 2.36.16 and Jodie (4th) 2.38.45. Great racing from the girls.

Supercoach tried to lengthen the ride in the short course by flying past the turn, & finished in 46.05.  Korgan in his first event posted an impressive 55.13.

Various excuses were given by the rest of the crew, some even claiming it wasn't on their program.  Others cited birthdays and weddings of all things.

Ali Fitch wins Coeur D'Alene Triathlon - 1.5/40/10

Ali proved she has overcome her injuries by winning the Coeur D'Alene Olympic Distance Triathlon in a record setting 2 hrs 09 mins 20 secs.  Way to go Ali.

Tiger pulls the plug on Darwin - Singapore

The recent announcement that Tiger is ceasing its Darwin Singapore Melbourne route caused a few heartbeats to increase.

Those doing the Singapore 70.3 and booked on Tiger sighed with relief when the October date was announced but some heading for Phuket in December will need to make alternate arrangements.

July News

Ali update

Ali is recovering from her injuries, has found a new bike sponsor and is looking to line up at Ironman Canada.  Tough lady.

IM Lake Placid 20/7/08

News overnight that Ali has crashed during the bike leg.  Conditions were atrocious with heavy rain & she has hit a pothole covered with water.  Came down so heavily her helmet broke in two. Ali has been taken to hospital with lots of road pizza particularly hip and elbow and is heading for a CAT scan for possible head injuries.

Very disappointing news, Ali was second out of the swim and was within 30 secs of leader on the bike.

Lake Alexander 20/7/08

Rob exchanged racing for race director duties & was immediately confronted with problems.  Trailer with a flat tyre required a quick rethink of course and a change of transition area.

The Cable Tie Guy was on fire this morning & scored a good win in 1.13.20.  The super psychologist Scott was also on form & posted a 1.16.56 to hold out guru Roland 1.17.37.  Rich (if only he had elastic laces) flew home in 1.18.44.  The jetsetting Al hopped of the plane & came straight out to play & was rewarded with a 1.20.09.  Rowdy came home in 1.24.18 ahead of the Coach who clocked 1.27.06 and was followed in quick succession by Lisa 1.27.30, Belinda 1.27.36. Bertram 1.28.11 & Rosie 1.29.03.  Barry, happy to be swimming again after elbow injury, clocked 1.38.44 on his road to recovery.

Notable no shows from the King and Queen of KUC who had a sleep in.  Micko, Lou, Sandra, Michelle were interested onlookers.

Singapore 14/7/08

The news is all good from Singapore.  Michelle lead the women's field from start to finish after swimming through the wave ahead (5 mins), stretching it on the bike and then running strongly (accompanied by leaders' escort) to finish in 2.26.46.

Nuggett was the best of the guys with an overall 4th and age group 2nd place in 2.21.05.  Training in Timor obviously agreed with Dave who scored 4th in M25-29 in 2.26.21 ahead of Micko in 5th 2.28.59.  Rob grabbed 7th in M40-44 with a strong bike leg & clocking 2.34.32.  Supercoach blitzed his age group in 2.43.17.  Lisa raced well & gained 3rd in F30-34 in 2.49.07.  Simon is in the sin bin for beating Robyn with his 2.53.05 to her 2.53.40.  Peta was somewhat battered in the tough swim but recovered to come home with a 3.06.55.

Lake Alex Triathlon 6/7/08

In the guys, Craig looked impressive with the disc on for the 750/26/5 event today and came in second in 1.11.57, behind Kyle,  after a good all round effort. Micko was up there after the swim/bike but then opted to nurse the calf & "walked" the run.

Guru Roland was 1.18.25 ahead of Rob 1.18.57.  Rich enjoyed his first race with DTC and posted an impressive 1.19.20, Rowdy was in at 1.22.10 with Supercoach crossing in 1.23.52. Bertram was on fire, blitzing in 1.26.34 (bound to be another bottle on the next event in that household).  Simon responded well to Saturday's long ride & stopped the clock at 1.27.19 and Phil was rapt with his comeback race effort of 1.32.11. Micko strolled across in 1.43.34 after having a good look at what racing at the back of the pack is like in the final stages.

The girls also did well.  Michelle crossed for second in 1.17.52 with Kate (1.23.08) taking third in her first Top End race. Lisa enjoyed feeling better than she has of late, & posted a strong 1.25.12 Rosie was also on a comeback after the flu and looked good for a 1.28.39.  The jetsetter came back to earth with 1.31.23 and Peta was cursing the 105km previous day ride when she crossed for 1.34.32.  Notable absentee was the blonde who kicked concrete instead.

June News

Bali International Triathlon 28/6/08

Supercoach and the "IM in waiting" headed over for the second annual Bali International Triathlon.  The Olympic Distance event was a surprise 2.2/42/10.  Organisers have agreed to give swim credit!

Age group 2nd placings for both in Bali.

Katherine Ultra Challenge 27/6/08

Ian and Nikki have successfully defended their Ultra Challenge titles and remain King and Queen of KUC. Mark came in 2nd. Full results not yet available.  Congratulations to all those who completed both individuals and teams and well done to all those support people.

Teams Event 22/6/08

The Redbacks intimidated all but the club stalwarts to come in  2nd in the DTC Teams triathlon at Lake Alexander.  Jodie, Bin, Jane Marie and Bertram had team tactics down to a fine art and time trialled like a pro outfit along Dick Ward Drive.

Daryl and Rosie used some lame excuse (virus related) to decimate their team's plan of action.  That left Louise & Robyn to team with Nick and Goose (poor Nick thought I said "gun" team when it was actually "fun").  Nick did come in handy with his disc wheel and ability to tow us all during the bike course. Team Bits & Pieces came in 3rd.

Sandra joined Belinda and Karen who were kitted out nicely in black and white theme; she was chaired across the line by her team mates so can only imagine she was the star of the show.

Good fun.

Fannie Bay Swim 21/6/08

The 2.1km swim across Fannie Bay is a challenge some just can't resist.  It was a bit choppy out there just to add to the degree of difficulty.  From the sidelines, it looked like a pretty tough day. Kyle was overall winner in 30.47.

Micko had a hit out and came in at 37.03; Michelle was 2nd in her age group 38.36;  Lisa (recovering from a virus) swam well to record 42.02; super psychologist Scott had a goodie with 43.56; Louise won her age group in 46.50; with Jane Marie 2nd in age group 47.38.

Swim squad members were well represented Ian 34.59 won his age group; Amanda 39.39; John 40.03; Briony 42.01; Erica 43.29; Elena 46.51; Lesley 47.25; Christine 48.18;  and Greg 52.07

City to Surf 15/6/08

Lots of great performances at City2Surf.

Sarah made Top 10 in the women (8th) & first 15-19 with her 56.11 first time effort.  Well done & congratulations.

Craig came in at 49.19; Guru Roland 51.35; the super psychologist Scott clocked 54.32; Rob did a swift 55.54 before coming down to Ultra training; Rowdy was on his heels 55.55; Bertram owes Bin a bottle of French champagne for her effort of 59.35; Al wanted wasted legs for his flight to Europe & clocked 1.00.21; Peta ran an awesome race to clock 1.02.23; Barry put his injuries behind him for a 1.02.34; Pete enjoyed his 1.05.49 then came back to support Lisa at Lake A; Bertram posted a swift 1.08.51; Jane Marie  came in at 1.11.40 and Sandra recorded a steady 1.12.55.

Micko also deserves a mention for all the hard work he put in behind the scenes. I'm sure he feels like he ran it 10 times over.

Wedding bells announced 14/6/08

The King and Queen of KUC are getting married in May next year. Congratulations Nikki and Ian.

May News

News from Hawaii

Sunday 1/6/08

Ali, Michelle, Robyn and Daryl are slowly coming back to earth after a really big day out yesterday.

Conditions in the swim at beautiful Hapuna Beach were extremely choppy.  Then it was crosswinds, headwinds, tailwinds on the bike followed by the toughest run ever over a variety of surfaces, up & down and round & round.

The conditions were too much for some and several competitors were unable to make the cutoff times for the swim and the bike but most of the field struggled through, albeit at slower times than they might have had on a better day.

It was very character building.

Results:

Ali Fitch Pro F 4th 4.36.16

Michelle Gailey F25-29 5.08.19

Daryl Stanley M60-64 5.58.15

Robyn Stanley F55-59 6.26.45

Big news - Robyn has a Kona slot.  Even bigger news - Michelle could have had one too, but declined to get more experience under her belt before she tackles the big one.

Thursday 29/5/08

Following flight delays, turbulence and missed inter-island flights, we finally made it to the Big Island. Ali was there to meet us, and to give a quick lesson on driving on the right hand side of the road.

As a triathlete, arriving here was pretty special.  This is the place where it all happens.

A ride on part of the IM course put it all in perspective - this is no gimmee!

The 70.3 course is no gimmee either and I'm sure come Saturday morning we are going to wake up praying for a calm day.

Highlight so far .... a swim on the course with Mr Turtle (scared the daylights out of me).

Now it's off to register and check out T2 followed by a drive over the bike course.

Ironman 70.3 Hawaii

Michelle, Daryl and Robyn head for Hawaii to race this weekend.  Ali has been training there this week and reports that it is hilly, chilly and raining.  Not quite what the others wanted to hear !

Congratulations Emma & Aaron

Emma and Aaron have a beautiful little girl, Ashlee Jayne.

Team Singapore

Craig, Micko, Daryl, Michelle, Lisa, Robyn and Peta all got spots in Team Singapore and will be heading over for the OSIM Singapore International Triathlon early in July.  Well done to all.  There will be some more fund raising happening to assist the team.

NT Olympic Distance Triathlon:

Michelle has added another title to her impressive list, taking the NT Olympic Distance Championship in a PB time of  2.17.16 (and 10th place overall) - Congratulations Michelle.

Nikki continued her post IM form and cruised on to the podium in third with 2.28.12.

Craig had set his sights on this event and pulled out a goodie to come in 3rd spot in the men's field in an impressive 2.09.12.  Micko was just behind in 2.09.42 for 4th, then came The Cable Tie Guy 2.10.50 (5th), followed in by Doc 2.12.59 (6th).

Rowdy and Supercoach had another battle royale, but this time Rowdy headed in the right direction to finish in 2.30.31 to Daryl's 2.30.57.

Pete was the good samaritan of the race, and stopped to assist a fellow competitor when they were in difficulty on the run.  Pete still came in at 2.53.19, followed by Barry 2.54.15 and "Mr Impressive" Bertram in his first Olympic Distance was next acros the line in 2.55.18.

Belinda was unfortunate enough to flat ... what a waste of good form. Bad luck Bin.   Beware the injured and ill triathletes the saying goes .... Rosie had a great comeback to OD finishing in 2.35.20; Lisa coughed her way to a pretty swift 2.40.35 ahead of Robyn 2.42.09, Jodie 2.44.54 & Peta 2.45.21.

A swag of age group champions were claimed as well - Michelle, Nikki, Peta, Jodie, Robyn, Mark, Craig & Al - well done.

April News

DTC Club Championships

Michelle may have struggled through the Lake Bennett course this time last year, but not so in 2008.  She lead the women's field from start to finish to take the Kerran Mudgway Memorial Championship Trophy in 1 hr 48 mins 42 secs.  Nikki "Duracell Bunny" Roddie just kept on going and made her way from 8th out of the swim to 3rd of the bike and then overtook Amanda Donohoe on the run to grab second spot in 1.53.41.

The men's field was the most competitive seen in years.  Kyle predictably had daylight behind him out of the swim with   Craig out in third 1 min 38 secs down, then came Michelle and Ian.  Mark was way back giving up 5 mins to Kyle.  Kyle was still in the lead off the bike, still a minute up on Matt & Doc. They both blew him away on the run with Matt 1.35.55 taking the Club Champion title from Ian l.38.29 & Kyle 1.39.34.  Craig ran strongly & finished in 4th 1.40.53 while the Cable Tie Guy tightened the pace to roar through the field on the bike and run and bring himself in to 5th in 1.41.14.

David was up in the top half of the results, Daryl beat Rowdy in, (courtesy of a slight directional error near the finish by Damo), Belinda  was in great form to lead in Robyn, Jane Marie & Pete.  Peta put up a gutsy effort post flu & came in ahead of Barry and Simon listened to his body and called it a day after the bike.

Bertram was in form in the short course and finished in 1.02.36, Rosie & Jodie kept each other company on the run and were happy with come back efforts.

A few were sidelined with colds and/or injury but were awesome in the supporter (cheek giving role).

DTC Zoot Sprint Series - final event

Race 3 of the Sprint Series was conducted at Lake Alexander today (Sunday 13 Apr 08) with Michelle coming in second and taking the Women's Series.  Belinda put together great results over the series to be 2nd behind Michelle, with Peta rounding out the podium places.  Well done girls.

Matt made if 3 out of 3 to clean sweep the Series.  2nd was the ever steady Robbie W. and guru Roland grabbed 3rd.

Congratulations - you are an Ironman !

News from Port Macquarie is that the Ironman finshers are all up and about early (champagne breakfast), all happy and all planning their next race !  Just what a coach wants to hear. Congratulations to all on fantastic results:

Matt Hubber      9.52.52
Ian Norton        10.23.19
Mick Outhred    10.52.38
Damien Brown   11.27.14
Mark Anzin       11.27.16
Nikki Roddie      11.45.08
Erica Reeve      11.53.10
Steve Denton   12.03.07
Louise Ogden    13.43.49

Rosie did a brilliant job with on site athlete spotting & provided race commentary when the ironmanlive athlete tracker stalled.

Port Mac coping with Top Enders

Port Macquarie has survived the arrival of our Ironman athletes but will be further tested when the Support Crew OIC hits town.  Rosie gets to Port today and will sort the logistics, get the banners happening, choose the viewing vantage points and make sure everyone gets their feet up (and that's only the first five minutes on her list).

First at Port Mac

Micko & the Cable Tie Guy have made it to Port Macquarie.  Same can't be said about their bikes yet.

March News

Race 2 Zoot Sprint Series

Michelle Gailey and Matt Hubber again blitzed the field at Race 2 (Palmerston).  The IM Oz crew awed the field with their level of fitness (and their gear) and Mick Outhred, Mark Anzin, Nikki Roddie, Louise Ogden, Damien Brown as well as Matt stood out in the crowd. We all thought Damien had peaked a week early as he was way up in the results.  Turned out he was one of those who exited a couple of laps early in the swim.   Lisa Quinell and Scott Bevis also did the same, oops.  Al Stancombe got all the way to T1 before realising he just couldn't swim that fast and headed back in to the pool to complete his laps. Belinda Birk again impressed as did Bertram & Will in the short race.  Supercoach finally raced after considering a team event and was pushed all the way by a very speedy Simon Jeggo (if that guy gets his swim time down a couple of minutes - watch out world) , Peta Jeggo didn't lose all bragging rights though as she came home strongly through the field.  Jane Marie Kerslake was tenacious in her efforts & was rewarded by flogging the socks of she who will remain nameless.

News from Mooloolaba:

David has returned to transition in a sag wagon after running into a competitor who had crashed into a witches hat about 10km in to the bike.  From the sounds of it Dave is in better condition than his Zipps. Jodie got a late call up to team "Power Pussies" and did the swim in 28.06.

Congratulations Ali Fitch:

Race 1 Zoot Sprint Series

Michelle Gailey was unchallenged from start to finish after gaining over a minute on the women's field at the DTC 750m swim, 25km bike, 5km run event at Lake Alexander on Sunday 16 Mar 08.  Her strong cycling ability increased her margin to 5 minutes at T2 and she was able to cruise home in 1.18.15 to a comfortable win in Race 1 of the Series.

Men's winner was Matt Hubber in what is considered a course record 1.08.11.  Jerome was 2nd in 1.08.45, followed by Kyle (1.10.56) in 3rd.

Scott Bevis is making his way up the leader board again, ditto the speedy David McLeod. Belinda Birk scored high in the pointscore as did Peta Jeggo.  Great to see Bertram Birk back albeit in a team.  Won't be long before he is back swimming as his elbow is completely healed. Barry Sullivan had an improved swim and bike.  A certain bike shop owner was heard to say that "training is all it's cracked up to be" following his efforts in the swim and run.

An absentee note was received from he who shall remain nameless.  The excuse was plausible - riding to the race and punctured a single.

Other names of note not racing were the IM Oz crew who were all down at Lake Bennett putting the finishing touches to their race preparations.

Bali Triathlon/KUC Clash

Ian Norton (57.56) came in second at the Darwin Triathlon Club Endura Enduro event. Supercoach was hanging in there (1.09.05) as were Simon (1.10.02), Peta (1.14.03), Louise 1.16.36) and Robyn  (1.18.42).

A few of our athlete's recently returned from Perth where, along with the challenges of the the jelly fish in the 1.5km river swim, 40km cycle and 10km run course, they endured searing hot and windy conditions on race day.  They were in Perth, along with over 500 of the best age group & elite triathletes from around the country, for the 2008 Australian Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships (Sunday 3 Feb 08).

Ian Norton achieved another fantastic result.    His fifth place (2hrs 10mins 07secs) in the M35-39 category was also 21st overall in male age group field and made for a rewarding change of pace to that of his current long distance training. Doc is training for Ironman Australia to be held April 6 in Port Macquarie and Perth required a major step up in speed when compared to his normal training.

An ever consistent Craig Garland recorded an 8th place in the M40-44 to add to similar top 10 successes in major interstate events over the past year.  First out of the water in his category, Craig raced strongly during the bike and run legs to stop the clock in 2hrs 20mins 25secs.

Singapore 70.3 triathlon age group winner, Michelle Gailey was uncertain of her fitness going in to the event. Recovering from an injury that has curtailed her run training recently, Michelle was well pleased with her time of 2 hrs 23 mins 22 secs, 4th place in the highly competitive  F25-29 category and her 20th overall female placing in a very strong field.

Nikki Roddie (2.34.49) and Lisa Quinell  (2.40.20) raced in the F30-34 category and recorded top 20 age group results with 13th and 16th respectively.

Noosa results:

Ian Norton and Nikki Roddie lived up to pre race favouritism and achieved the top results of large group of triathletes coached by Daryl who competed at the 25th Noosa Triathlon (4 Nov 07) in Queensland.

Doc recorded the fastest time of the group (2 hrs 09 mins 33 secs) and 6th place in the M35-39 category (that's from 369 competitors, over twice the size of a field in a huge NT event). Speedy Mark Anzin 2.15.28 placed 21st in the same category.

The Duracell Bunny Nikki  recorded a solid  2.32.34 and 20th place in the F30-34 category (141 competitors).  Awesome performance from the Pocket Rocket.

Craig Garland (M40-44) again relished big event conditions and crossed the line in 7th place in 2.11.01 (238 competitors).  Nugget recently placed 11th in the longer Gold Coast Half Ironman and earlier this year was 6th at the annual Mooloolaba Triathlon.

Matt Hubber, coming straight from his efforts in the 10 day, 10 stage Crocodile Trophy Mountain Bike Race in Far North Queensland, backed up well at Noosa to score another Top 10 placing for the group. Matt's 2.14.01 included sin bin inspection but still got him a 5th in the M25-29 category.  Mick Outhred (8th in 2.15.45) also made the Top 10 in the same age group.

Aaron Buncle 2.18.47, David McLeod 2.33.52, Elliott Blackley 2.34.34, Lisa Quinell 2.37.55, Alex Ensor 2.42.15, Simon Jeggo 2.42.31, Jane Marie Kerslake 2.42.49, Rosie Sullivan 2.46.14, Jodie McLeod 2.46.14, Louise Ogden 2.47.27 and Peta Jeggo 2.49.25
all raced well at Noosa and then went straight into social mode.

Pre race favourites Craig Walton (1.48.46) and Emma Snowsill  (2.01.09) were overall race winners at Noosa.
